Flat Shoulder Turn

What is actually happening

You set a forward tilt at address, and your shoulders are ignoring it. Instead of turning on the incline your spine created, they level out and spin flat, the same motion as turning to talk to someone behind you. The tilt you built gets abandoned one move into the swing, and the club flattens right along with it.

What it costs you

Flat shoulders pull the club inside and force a stand-up move somewhere before impact, and every one of those compensations has a miss attached. The lead shoulder that should work down toward the ball never gets there, so the club comes in shallow and the contact runs thin. Turn on your tilt and the club finds the ball on its own.

The cue

Your lead shoulder works down toward the ball going back, not around toward the horizon. Chin proud, shoulder turning underneath it.

The drill

Club-Across-Chest Tilt Turns

No ball and no swing, just the turn itself. Cross your arms over your chest with a club pressed flat against your collarbones, take your address tilt, and rotate to the top. The club across your chest is now a dial showing exactly what your shoulders did. Turned on your spine angle, its lead end points down at the ground a few feet ahead of where the ball would sit. Turned flat, it points out at the horizon. Make ten slow turns watching the tip, and memorize what down feels like: the lead shoulder working toward the ball, chin staying proud so the shoulder passes under it rather than bumping it. Then hit five 9-irons keeping that downhill feel. Film one down the line and check P4. Shoulder line matching spine tilt is the frame you want.
