Corrected at P4 Top

Across the Line at the Top

What is actually happening

At P4, the top of the backswing, your club points right of the target instead of down the line. It got there honestly. The trail elbow drifted, or the wrists kept hinging after the turn finished, and the shaft crossed over. Nothing about the position feels wrong while you're in it. The bill comes on the way down.

What it costs you

A club pointed right of the target wants to come down from behind you, and the ball wants to leave on that same line. Release it and it hooks. Fight it and it becomes the pull. Square the club at P4 and the downswing gets to be boring, which is exactly what a downswing should be.

The cue

At the top, the shaft points down the target line, like an arrow laid behind you. Parallel to the line, never across it.

The drill

Top-of-Swing Mirror Check

You can't fix a position you never see, and nobody sees their own top. So put a mirror over your trail shoulder indoors, or a phone on a stick down the line outside, and swing to the top and hold it. Look at the shaft. Pointing at the target, or right of it? Now make the correction without lowering the club: draw the clubhead back toward the target line and feel what changes. It's usually about an inch less wrist hinge, or the trail elbow settling closer to your side, and it will feel like a shorter swing. It isn't. It's the same swing without the overrun. Do ten look-and-fix reps, then hit five balls from the corrected top. Film the last one to confirm the shaft and the target line agree. The club you aim at the top is the club you deliver.
